Apple upgraded its iPad Pro lineup in March 2020 with a fast A12Z Bionic processor, dual rear cameras, a new LiDAR scanner for enhanced reality ability, enhanced audio, and an optional magic keyboard accessory that includes the trackpad on the iPad.
Apple says that the 2020 iPad Pro is its latest iPad Pro to date with several “pro” advancements to those who want an iPad that can substitute a computer.
The iPad Pro is unchanged in design and is available in 11 and 12.9 “sizes with a full-screen design and an edge-to-edge display without a home button. Unlike iPad Pro models for 2018, the 2020 iPad Pro sports a Face ID TrueDepth camera, which uses biometric authentication face recognition.
Each of the iPad Pro versions features a silver or Space Gray aluminum chassis with smooth, rounded edges, which surround the Liquid Retina display. With wide color support, the true tone for the adaption to ambient light, anti-reflective coating and 120Hz refreshing abilities, the liquid retina display remains unchanged from the 2018 model.
There is a new rear camera system while the general design of the iPad Pro remains the same. Two camera units are available, that include a 12-megapixel wide-angle camera and a 10-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera.
Features such as Smart HDR, Quad-LED True Tone Flash, wide color and 4K video capture are available for up to 60 fps.
A new LiDAR Scanner that utilizes reflected light to measure the distance of objects up to five meters from each other at nano-second speeds supports the two-camera setup. According to Apple, the new iPadOS depth frames combine LiDAR scanner depth points with data from cameras and motion sensors for a whole new class of iPad Pro AR experiences.
Instant AR placement, improved motion capture, and occlusion of individuals will benefit existing ARKit apps. Developers can have access to a new scene Geometry API using new ARKit capabilities to create new scenarios without the LiDAR scanner.
Apple has enhanced the measurement application with the LiDAR scanner and can calculate a person’s height automatically. Through automatic vertical and edge guides, object measures are faster and more precise and there’s also a new Ruler View for more granular measurements.
Within the iPad Pro 2020, the A12Z Bionic Chip is equipped with an8-core GPU, a8-core CPU, and improved thermal design and tuned performance controllers for faster than ever performance. The Neural Engine handles core ML functions and added real-life functionality and processes LiDAR scanner data.
The 2020 iPad Pro, like the 2018 iPad Pro models, features a USB-C port for charging and connecting to USB-C accessories including 4K and 5K monitors. The iPad’s USB-C port can also be used to refuels devices like iPhone and Apple Watch.
In order to capture “super clean audio,” Apple has added five quality studio microphones to the iPad Pro. Four speakers are included for an immersive experience in all aspects.
The A12Z processor provides up to 10 hours battery life on a single charge for the 2020 iPad Pro models. Other features of iPad Pro involve WiFi 6 support, gigabit-class LTE for cell models and 128 GB to 1 TB storage.
The 2020 iPad Pro is supported by the Apple Pencil second generation, which magnetically connects to an iPad and charges a direct physical connection.
Apple has developed a new Magic Keyboard for the 2020 iPad Pro, basically a new variant of the Smart Keyboard that features trackpad, backlight keys, and a 1 mm key travel scissor mechanism.
The Magic Keyboard is magnetically attached to the iPad Pro and includes lifting hinges to adjust the smooth view angle of up to 130 degrees. It comes with USB-C passthrough charging and features a folio-like design that folds and prevents the iPad when not being used.
A trackpad and mouse support for the iPad are added to the new Magic Keyboard in iPadOS 13.4. Support for iPad’s trackpad is designed as a first touch experiment. The cursor appears as a circle but moves to highlight user interface elements such as text fields, Home screen, and Dock applications and other items that can be tapped.
The trackpad can be used to swap apps, edit text, access the application switcher, activate the dock and control center, and more. Support for Trackpad is available both in iOS apps for first and third parties.
While trackpad experiences are designed mainly for the Magical Keyboard, others, such as Magic Mouse 2 and Magic Trackpad 2, connect to the iPad Pro. The new Magic Keyboard even works with the 2018 iPad Pro.
The pricing of iPad Pro starts at $799 on the 11-inch 128 GB WiFi model only or $949 for the 128Gb cellular variant. The 12.9-inch model costs $999 for the 128 GB WiFi model and $1,149 for the 128 GB cellular model. Higher prices include additional storage.
The new iPad Pro is now available for order and will be available for customers on Wednesday, 25 March.
Apple’s Apple Pencil is available for $129, and the new iPad Pro-Magic Keyboard is due to arrive in May. The price is $299 for the 11-inch and $349 for the 12.9-inch model. The updated Smart Keyboard Folio, which fits the new iPad Pro, is available at $179 for the11-inch iPad Pro and $199 for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro.
